At Kimble Roden, we don’t just design beautiful homes - we design lifestyles and experiences.
And light, in all its forms, plays a central role in how those experiences are felt.
Whether it’s the energising warmth of the morning sun pouring into a kitchen or the ambient glow that softens a living space at night, light has the power to completely transform a home.
In our latest blog we discuss some of the key principles of lighting design and how to achieve effective and stunning results.
Prioritising Natural Light
Natural light brings life to a living space.
It enhances materials, creates dynamic shadows and helps interiors feel open, calm and connected to the outdoors.
It’s also an essential factor in wellbeing and how people feel in their homes - something we never overlook.
During our design phase we explore how light moves through a space throughout the day and across the seasons and we use this understanding to inform our architectural approach.
We consider the orientation of the building, the size and positioning of windows and doors and how internal layouts can be shaped to maximise the light available.
From double-height glazing that floods an entrance hall with sunlight to strategically placed rooflights that brighten even the most tucked-away corners, we look for every opportunity to invite daylight in.
Enhancing Interiors Through Clever Lighting Design
Of course, good lighting design doesn’t stop when the sun sets.
We believe lighting should be layered, thoughtful and entirely bespoke to the way our clients live.
That’s why we design comprehensive lighting schemes that incorporate a mix of:
By layering these types of light and using dimmers, control systems and concealed fittings where appropriate, we craft interiors that adapt beautifully to different times of day and different moods.
Materials and Finishes
In our designs, surfaces and textures are never chosen in isolation. We think carefully about how they interact with both natural and artificial light. Reflective materials like polished plaster or glazed tiles can bounce light around a room, while matte or textured finishes can absorb and diffuse it, adding depth and interest.
Even paint colour choices are influenced by light - what works in a north-facing room will differ entirely from what suits a sun-drenched space.
Every detail is considered to ensure that light enhances the look and feel of the final space.
A Home That Works With Nature - Not Against It
At its core, designing with light is about creating a home that works in harmony with its surroundings. It’s about harnessing the natural environment to improve how our clients live - whether that’s waking up to the sunrise, enjoying natural warmth in the winter or relaxing in a softly lit space after dark.
We’re proud to create homes that are not only intelligently designed but feel genuinely uplifting to live in.
